By “certainty can bend,”
A checkerboard has a clear rule: black, white, black, white. Your eye learns it immediately. When that grid twists, you can still recognise the pattern, but you can no longer predict exactly where it will go. The rule is still visible; its promise of predictability has weakened.
As a metaphor, that could speak to beliefs we build our lives around: this is who I am; this relationship is secure; this is how my future will unfold. When circumstances change, we can feel as though we’ve lost our bearings. Sometimes we have. Sometimes we’re discovering that our understanding was only part of the picture.
There’s discomfort in that, but also possibility. A fixed idea of yourself can provide stability—and eventually become restrictive. Bending might mean making room for something you couldn’t previously imagine.
It never quite settles whether the distortion is a collapse or a transformation. The same curve can look threatening or playful depending on how you approach it.
Its all about the moment when a familiar structure becomes strange, and you haven’t yet decided what that change means.
